Bidding Goodbye

Funny, I can’t quite remember
What did you say
And what did I reply
You looked at me, shyly
I glanced at you, slyly
You held my hands, softly
I touched your arm, briefly

The moment, spellbound, was
Frozen forever
In the sudden clasp
Chest to chest
Smothering a desperate
Beating heart
Bidding goodbye

Yes, we may meet tomorrow
But this moment, frozen forever
Will never be again

The sky, aloof, engulfs my thoughts
A scatter of blue frost drops
Spatter across grass tops
My nostrils flare in my quickening breath

Cold earth, cold boughs, cold leaves -
I breathe it all in
Letting them envelop me
In a quiet embrace

The trees sigh, they let out
Their breath, so long captive
Within their hard bark
Ever peeling, ever discarding

Revealing renewed limbs
Shimmering in the dying day
Dancing in the breeze

Reaching for the sky, aloof

My Seattle trip, to date

So, I've come to Seattle to experience the winter. Thought it would be unbearably cold, even by now - to my Indian weather standards - but, it isn't that bad. Not yet, anyway.

So, here's pictures till date, which includes my trip to Walla Walla:

Life's Betrayals

Life's betrayals come in many forms
It comes in the treachery of those
Whom you thought were life friends
And held close to your heart ---
Until that cruel stab in the back
--- Oh, the excruciating pain of that knife
So sharp!

It comes in the disappointments
That Life's hand deals out to you
What began so full of promise
Turns out to be an illusory mirage ---
And then comes that mid-life reckoning
--- Oh, the excruciating twist of that knife
So sharp!

But the biggest betrayal of them all
Is when Life itself forsakes you
That which you took for granted
Your life's breaths, your heart's beats ---
Your companions since you were born, suddenly gone
--- Oh, the excruciating thrust of that knife
So sharp!

At least he had an old age home, In bestest cult no tears are shed forVrindavan Widows

(I've finally written a poem after a long time. It is inspired by this:

'This man died alone in an old age home. What he left behind brought tears to everyone's eyes' http://www.speakingtree.in/blog/this-86yearold-man-died-alone-in-an-old-age-home-what-he-left-behind-brought-tears-to-everyones-eyes )

At least he had an old age home, in bestest cult no tears are shed for Vrindavan Widows
At least he had an old age home where he could write of his loneliness - the loneliness of those who are no longer of use, Vrindavan Widows of bestest cult don't have the privilege of writing their heart rending poems, telling of their plight -
Most of them are illiterate anyway, their redundancy began when they were born, born the accursed gender, a female child, in the bestest cult -
Most of them will be ignored anyway, their redundancy makes the stories of their plight irrelevant, in the bestest cult -
At least he had an old age home where he was placed, perhaps by a family too busy to take care, perhaps too uncaring to take care, perhaps he went there himself seeking the care his increasing infirmity needed, Vrindavan Widows are thrown out on the streets by the "sacred families" of bestest cult, thrown out because they bring bad luck, their very shadow, evil, because of the evil of losing their husbands, to death.

If stay she must, in the "sacred family" where she had given birth to the much longed for, the most prized for, the most prayed for, sons, she must live like a shadow in the dark corners of her home, no longer her home, which, when a new bride, a new mother, with loving care, a tender hand, she had tended, fed, decorated, kept spic and span.

But now, a widow, like an empty shadow she must exist. A shaven head, a plain white sari, bare hands, bare ears, a bare neck - these would be her adornments from henceforth, for the rest of her life. No outward signs of being, of feeling, of thinking, of life, must she show. For her, from henceforth, her plate would be sparse, devoid of flavour. For her, from henceforth, her face would be blank, devoid of laughter. Like an empty shadow - alive, but dead - she must exist in the dark corners of her existence, in the home that once was her home, if stay she must.

But when a burden she becomes, an extra mouth to feed, a superfluous relic of a forgotten past, cantankerous and needy, needy of the same tender love, the same tender care, she once freely gave, then go she must. If reluctant she is, if resist she does, out she will be thrown, bundled, shoved into a train, to Vrindavan. A Vrindavan Widow she will be from henceforth, miles away from a home that once was her home, for the rest of her life. The dusty streets of Vrindavan would be her new home, for the rest of her life.

At least he had an old age home where his basic needs were cared for, Vrindavan Widows eke out a living begging on the streets of the land of the bestest cult
At least he had an old age home where he lived his full life in relative dignity, in bestest cult, young Vrindavan Widows are no longer burnt alive as Sati on their dead husband's pyre, but are debased, prostituted, supplied to any customer who will use and pay for their keep by the very ashrams they seek shelter in
At least he had an old age home with hygienic facilities, medicines for his ailing old body, Vrindavan Widows must live in grime and dirt, victims of sexually transmitted diseases, TB, dysentery
At least he had an old age home where his infirmities were assisted, a warm bed with a mattress, clean bed sheets and a blanket, Vrindavan Widows, worn out and feeble, must fend for themselves - bathe, cook and feed themselves, no helping hands to help climb up steep rickety steps to grimy hovels where the hard floor is their resting place - no hot water baths, no warm blankets, not even a bed to stave off the winter chill creeping through their wrinkled skin, wasted limbs, deep into their brittle bones
At least he had an old age home with running water, toilets and sewage system, Vrindavan Widows must live squalid lives at the end of their lives in the land of the bestest cult
At least he had an old age home where family visited him sometimes, Vrindavan Widows live and die, hidden away, forgotten, shunned by their families, ignored by a society that prides itself as the bestest cult

a mother's wait

the eyes are full - black
no light reflections
the plump full face
suddenly thin - haggard
the whispering crowd waits
with the mother
some are softly weeping
wiping unbidden tears
the mother(planted on the sofa)
her eyes still uncomprehending
breaks into sudden wails
(the weeping crowd wails with her
..some offer her low words of solace)
but she soon subsides
into her haggard silence
her eyes look towards
the open door sometimes
(the doorstep littered with
sandals, shoes, and more people)
and sometimes at the
chadar spread at her feet
then back to the door
almost as a mother would
when expecting her child back from school
it was around midnight when we got the news
now it's about 12 noon
what is causing the delay
why isn't he back home yet
her black eyes, full, unreflecting
questions the open doorway

suddenly there is a buzz
he is arriving in 10 minutes
a roll of fresh wails erupts
a little later
someone says, he's come
the mother now tearless, silent
looks expectantly at the doorway
almost as if her 9 year old
would run in with his schoolbag
shouting, "Mother, I am hungry..give me something to eat!"
it begins to rain
the mother looks out of the window
her tears flowing down now
and says, "Look, it's raining"

they carry her 9 year old son in
limp and small, wrapped in white
and lay him on the chadar at her feet

(my neighbour's 9 year old son died on the 14th. i used to chat with him whenever i spotted him. he was a reserved child, but was naughty with his mother, as she would often tell me. he was operated on for a cyst in the brain and died. we are an old neighbourhood. it was a terrible shock for all of us.)

The River

I flow, Into the ocean, I become one with it

I vaporize, I become cloud, Crash into the face

Of jagged mountain, Sentinel of the world

I flow once again, Once again, I become river

Meandering through forest lands and plains

Ever inconstant, Ever constant

Ever evaporating, Ever replenishing

Ever changing, Ever the same

Ever dying, Ever eternal

Ever flowing, Ever being still

On my face, I mirror, Your face, And those of whom you love

Those who have departed, Those who sojourn, Those who are yet to arrive

Beneath my surface, Beyond the sound, Of my mighty roar

If you put your ear to my heart, And listen with care, You will hear

The sacred sound – AUM –

The first flowing out, The second flowing in

The third flowing into silence – AUM -

And then there is, A hidden fourth, Beyond that silence

Another silence, An all encircling silence

The womb, Within which, Is held

The roar, Of The Cosmic Ocean

Weekend Wine & Jazz, And a pictorial tale of the eternal traingle

Have come down to Pune for the weekend, the birds are chirping, squaking, the

cats are lounging about or the males vying for the attention of the current

female around. The fights in these encounters can get pretty loud and bloody.

Big Frey, being the oldest is getting a rough time these days. The younger,

stronger tawny tom has practically chewed up Big Grey's ears. I love this moment

I've managed to capture in this pic - the eternal traingle theme of Bollywood

blockbusters - where the two males are yowling and glaring at each other

threateningly, while the female seemingly is feigning a 'bored with you kiddish

guys' look (actually, if you can read cats' eyes/faces, she is scared) - Cats

can be so human sometimes.

My weekends are pretty fun and busy these days - trekking, musical shows, art

shows and so on. This weekend I'm gonna join a bunch of wine experts and lovers

for wine tasting - spanish wine it is - at a fine dine. And a day of jazz music.

Both of which I'm looking forward to. Meanwhile, a friend of mine has gifted me

a bottle of Bordeaux which I'm saving for some special occasion, though it's

really hard to resist.

Meanwhile, finished the third

One of the problems I have with my painting - the motivation part of it - is

that I soon get bored with a piece I may be painting once I solve the puzzle or

challenge. After it stops being a challenge, after the puzzle is resolved in my

mind, it just becomes a 'going through the motions' kind of exercise. If I do

manage to actually finish a piece, like this one, it's due to sheer perseverance

- and I hate 'perseverance' when I'm painting, it has to be exciting all

through.

Anyway, despite my hating it, on to perseverance with my purple flowers and my

sunflowers.

Working on two pieces

Well, I'm working on two paintings..struggling a bit with both, though happier with the effects I'm managing to get with the sunflowers. Acrylics is both fun and liberating, as well as damned frustrating.. as I keep saying, it just dries up too fast, and the lower layers seem to absorb the pigments I put on subsequent layers, dulling and darkening them. But the big plus point is, it's so forgiving.. so I shall persist. I love that I don't have to deal with the fumes of turpentine, and that I don't have to worry about things getting muddied as I work almost immediately on layers.

The beginning stages of paintings are always scary..one really doesn't know how it will end up.. a disaster or a success..

Ahhh, Pune..!

Ahhh, Pune..! I don't quite know what it is about this place, but I just feel I belong. There is deep peace.. I really don't know how to describe it.. My soul is smiling quietly.. is the best way I can put it :)

I and two crows and various tiny birds that flitted into the little trays of water I keep for them in the garden (they love wiggling into them to bathe) and two cats, one named Big-Grey, the other, Fluff-Grey.. all of us spent quality time in the garden early yesterday morning. Me doing yoga first, then sipping my pudina chai after, sitting crosslegged, very Buddha-like. Big-Grey and Fluff-Grey are not my pets, they just hang around the place since I toss them some fish when I'm here. Though they seem quite able to take care of themselves because they look in pretty good shape despite my long absence from here. I'm wary of Big-Grey (a male) who has almost sliced my fingers off occasionally if my hand strays too close to his face when I toss fish, plus he bullies Fluff-Grey (a female) to grab all the fish. Fluff-Grey is wary of me, obviously doesn't trust us humans.. very intelligent.

I checked out all my plants, watered and looked after by Hira-bai, my maid, in my absence. She doesn't much care for the cats though.. always complains bitterly about the cats I always seem to collect. I don't know why, but cats seem to gravitate to me.. I must have been a cat in some past life, perhaps they know that.. Cats know everything! You can tell by gazing into their knowing eyes.. Big-Grey's eyes are green like new leaves when the sun shines through them. Fluff-Grey's are brown, like a muddy lake.

There's a slight chill in the early morning air, harbinger of the winter, though the rest of the day was beautifully warm and sun-filled. I spent most of it in the garden, pottering about amongst my plant pots. Also started a new painting, sunflowers in a vase, which I will probably finish later today, after I go and do my bit at the polling booth.

And now, for a hot cup of pudina chai, and then, after the sky lightens a little, my yoga in the garden.

I am in peace and joy :)

Feeling fulfilled

My life now is totally about sipping endless cups of tea, allowing it to go tepid, then cold, while I paint and paint and paint.. to my heart's content. Just finished an abstract-ish bunch of purple and white flowers in a flower pot, and I'm feeling as content as a cat that has lapped a bellyful of milk and  then stretches out in the sun and yawns herself into a blissful nap. Only difference is, my mind is so energised that sleep is eluding me. So, instead, I begin ruminating, as usual, about this mysterious effect painting has on me.. I guess on all artists, whatever their field.

Why do I do it.. paint..? It's not that I need the paintings I do.. it's not that I sell my stuff (except for one or two).. I haven't even bothered to start trying to sell them. Like most artists, I'm totally not clued into the commercial aspects of life, especially about my artwork. So here I am, painting off and on over the years, my canvases, papers, pieces of wood on which I do them collecting in cupboards, on cupboards, under the bed, leaning on walls, on every spare surface I can find to keep them. Why, what is this need that drives me to do something that seems so useless, purposeless?

The answer, I think, is the great need I have to create. Painting is like magic for me.. to watch formless paint turn into a flower, a mountain, a tree on a flat featureless surface is sheer magic. Plus, painting, creating these forms, or just abstract forms using colours and brush strokes to create mystery, is a challenge.. and I love challenges. The challenge of mastering an intricate rose, for example.. or a landscape.. keeps me interested in life.. keeps my child-like sense of wonder at watching, examining the creation all around me alive. When I am in painting mode, my senses are constantly alive.. when I see a sunset, I wonder what colours I would need to capture the beauty.. every leaf, stone, puddle of water is about shape, form, shades, colours that exist in my paintbox, and the end of my paintbrush with which I recreate them on my canvas.. What can be more fulfilling than that?

There's no wifi here, so though I've clicked them on my iPad, I can't post the pictures of my paintings yet here. Tried my camera, but something's wrong with the battery... I need to buy a new one... I also need to buy a phone which could be the means of posting my pics... which I just don't have the time for.. So until I get a wifi connection, or a new battery, or a new phone, I guess I'll just talk about my paintings.

"Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine."

I usually don't post other's poems here..but my poetic mind has gone into deep freeze.. Despair, hopelessness, don't bring out the poet in me.. Joy, happiness, hope do.. So, read Mary Oliver instead..

WILD GEESE

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting —
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

My birthday pics at the brewery

Nandini Layout, where my bro's old flat in Bangalore is, is and always has been a conservative Kannadiga sort of area. So, the Orion Mall and District 6 Brewery in it, is quite out of character in this area. Anyway, I love the brewery, especially for the great beer.. so, decided to celebrate my birthday there with my bro. The beer is made by brewmaster, Paul Hoffman, whose pic is here too.. a lovely genial guy with a cute sense of humour. The last two pics were taken on another day when we had gone shopping at the mall, and stopped off at Starsbuck for some coffee.

Well, this year marks the end of my 50s decade, from the next year I step into my 60s.. I don't feel any older than in my teens..seriously..it comes as a bit of a shock and feels strange that I am considered a "senior citizen" now..

My best birthday gift

Neil, my six year old nephew, a natural abstract artist, painted this for me. When he called me up on the morning of the 21st, he said he was on his deck (we call it balcony here of course) with his paints and paper, thinking of what to paint for me. So I suggested why not paint the lake which his deck overlooks. He said, yeah, great idea, Rita (he sounds so grown up these days) and painted this beautiful picture for me. I've told Nondi, my sister and his mother, to get him into a weekend art class, so that his natural talent is nurtured - just look at the imagination he has, the colours of the sky!

Passionate despair

I am in passionate despair
Depression is the perfume I wear
It seems Life has ordained wretchedness
For me, so when happiness does finally arrive
If it ever does, I will appreciate it better.
Ever since that night - so many nights ago -
When I'd dreamt that he loved me
I have been sleepless, dreamless
Sitting around waiting
Dabbling into my woes
Plunging into seas of attempted prose
Which I pass off as poetry
Floundering in the throes of my heartbreak
Trying to master this dense disaster
Penning my misery deep into the night
My sleep deprived eyes
Getting puffier by the minute
Hoping for a glimmer of hope
From the other side
Where my slumberous love resides
In resplendent uncaring oblivion

Yeah, even in despair, I can be funny
And god knows I am in despair
But what difference does it make
My love, he will not awake!

How do you paint a dog's howl?

I've begun painting again... and it's beautiful... It's like coming home, after being away for long.. No, it's not easy.. yet.. it never is easy, actually, even when I'm in the flow, but especially so after a long break. The blank canvas, though it's always a thrill to behold..touch..smell..feel.. also fills me with trepidation. Often, I will pencil in a sketch pretty fast... and then flounder, agonising about committing it to paint. When I was young, as far back as I can remember, I would always have a sketch book (we used to call them drawing books, back then.. now, in our Americanised world, it has become an "art journal), which I constantly kept filling, page after page of drawings, watercolour paintings, of anything that caught my fancy.. I don't know when I stopped carrying a sketch book around with me, but somewhere along the way, I did. Somewhere along the way Life caught up with me, dealt me a blow or two, and robbed me of my sketch book.

Now, I think I will get my old companion back.. and fill it again with what my heart feels, what my mind sees.. There are so many wondrous things..the myriad flowers, leaves, rocks, stones on the ground..the sun piercing through cracks in the tree canopies, filtering through leaves.. I love to muse and wonder how to capture those fleeting images with my paint and brush..how exactly can I create that translucent green-gold tint..what stroke should my brush make to capture that impression left in my mind, my soul..

Sunrises, sunsets, the deep black-blue of the night.. dogs howling in the night (as they're doing now).. the dance of light and colour and darkness and sounds..bird calls, a child's cry, a group bhajan filtering in through the window.. All of these always fill me with thrill and excitement deep inside myself.. How do you paint a dog's howl?

I realise that no matter what blows life deals me with, no matter how many times my soul shrivels up and I lose my sketch book, no matter if my art is good or bad or great or nothing..this is the road I was meant to be on.. While sometimes I may lose my way, and sometimes I will just sit on a wayside bench and simply watch the days go by, eventually this is the journey I must take.

One thing of note though.. I have noticed that when I'm in painting mode, I stop scribbling my bouts of poetry, and vice versa.. I wonder why that is so..

The Silent Canvas Of My Mind, My Heart

It's like a dream bubble. Whether I sit still in a chair by the window, or cross legged on the floor in the balcony, by which tree branches rustle and wave, where crows come and perch and peer at me curiously, or a squirrel darts across, its fur the colour of the bark where it races up and down all day long, or a koel calling long and sweet. And my mind begins smearing, green, gold, red, blue, creating vivid, vibrant pictures on my silent canvas..

I try and make alive the colours that I see, the voices that I hear, in my world outside, in my world inside..fusing them both together..in my silent canvas.

I've been existing.. Being born and reborn.. Life after life, age after age.. Carrying my silent canvas in my heart, in my mind, in whichever direction my life lines twisted and turned. I look up at the sky and see clouds skidding by, the paintbrush in my mind paints them in their greys, in their sunlit golds and pinks. I walk on the cracked footpath, where each day I exercise my body, my mind, where an old man sits crunched, his claw hand emerging hesitantly, his rheumy eyes looking expectantly for the coin I give sometimes, while the paintbrush of my heart paints his yellow eyes, his worn teeth, his beaten face, his crumpled limbs, all in a heap, by a scatter of fallen leaves as withered as him, on the silent canvas of my mind.

I turn into a busy street.. Everyone is rushing, moving, pushing, scrambling.. Only the trees stand still, rooted to their stony spot, ignored, forgotten by the throngs.. I stand rooted with them, slowly watching the sun setting, sprinkling its crimson dust in the sky, on the leaves, on the ground.. And, while another day dies in its blood red hues, the street lights come alive, one by one in rows, spilling their yellow pools of light on the passers by hurrying home.

And I am the tree watching their faces shrouded in the half lit dark.. My silent canvas hurries along with them for a while, wondering which path they will take, wondering what their destination will be. Wondering what destiny I will give them in the silent canvas in my heart, in my mind.

I pause for a while, then take my solitary path into the silent canvas of my life... The dream bubble where I exist... Green, gold, red, blue...  Life after life... Age after age.

Curtain of anonymity

He let her in
Suddenly, one day
They speak to each other
Through the curtain
Of anonymity
Like explorers do
Of discovering new
Unknown lands

He opened the door
Suddenly, one day
Inviting her into
His unknown world
And she walked
Right in

She didn't turn around to see
If he had bolted the door behind her
Or had left it wide open
She was engrossed in learning
His unknown world
Through the curtain
Of anonymity

Reaching for the sky

You steal into my thoughts
Like the patter of raindrops
In the silver of this monsoon night
Gently awakening my senses

Wet earth, wet boughs, wet leaves -
I breathe it all in
Letting them envelop me
In a quiescent embrace

The trees sigh, letting out
Their breath, so long captive
Within their hard bark
Now peeling, discarding

Revealing renewed limbs
Shimmering in the rain
Dancing in the breeze
Reaching for the sky
