Togetherness, apart

She gives him
Pieces of her heart
With her words
Spun in her solitudes
He gives her
Pieces of his silences
Spun in deep purple voids

Bitter-sweet is the scent
Of this un-named flower
Togetherness, apart

A pebble on a beach

I am just a pebble on a beach

Or perhaps a sea-hare

On the seashore . . .

My life is but a blink

Caught in the ebb and flow

In the vast ocean of Time

I am one with my mother -- Earth

Captured in her celestial dance

Travelling unknown paths

Through starry stardust

Forever espoused to the Sun

Held in his unrelenting clasp

Forever longing

For her lover -- the Moon

Keeping him enchained

Within her grasp

Forever a speck

Of celestial dust

In the vast sea

Of the Universe . . .

What matter if I know not why

I am just a pebble on a beach

Or just a sea-hare on the seashore

afraid of drowning

it is you it is you who

are the ocean swishing

washing whispering humming

the heady wine of your songs filled

with the seductive blue-greens of the skies

the honey salt of your sprays the sedating

fingers of your breezes combing my

tresses caressing my senses

flowing helplessly floundering powerlessly

in the grip of your rolling rippling waves

i am the earth solid as rock

yet soft and shifting as the sand

drowning in your arms

against which you crash and pull

inexorably trying to break

my will tearing my heart

my tender limbs into shreds

you crash and recede far out of reach

from my clinging lips my clutching eyes

and rise and roll again in your inescapable

relentless waves so overwhelming

so overpowering so huge so huge

enough to swallow me

engulf me claim me subdue me

in those unfathomable depths

from where my life-oxygen my sun

my moon my stars my birds on wing

would forever be destroyed

turning me into barren

sand a parched desert where

not a blade of green

would spring up in hope

of new life –

my love, forever must I be

the lone rock standing

staunch in an empty shore

afraid of drowning in

your silent dream songs

which you fling against me over and over

until time turns into water wind and stone

A drowsy afternoon slumber

somnolence creeping in the grass

drugged in dreamlike torpor

underfoot, the wild creeper climbing drunkenly

up the dosing trunk of the guava, sleeping off

the wine of the cloudy sunshine, the wash

drooping, groggy in the tender heat, wafting

soapy from the clothesline, the fanned leaves

of the papaya spreads drowsily open, drinking

the yellow liquid warmth, the fruit turgid, hanging

green-orange ponderously pendulous,

enfolded by the velvet air, the spider weaving

its sticky tales in strings of silver mazes, a sudden

shuddering fluttering of pigeon’s wings, a startled

crow’s indignant caw-caw,  the koel's sharp cry,

an insect’s lazy buzz-buzz crawling

through the tranquillised petals of nodding flowers

sun-burnt fallen leaves, sodden

soaked by a monsoon shower --

a book slipping from insensate fingers

its pages falling open haphazardly

its half read story crawling out of the open pages like ants

tumbling stumbling to the slumbering earth

Melodies Remembered

(Something I plucked from the past.)

…“My love has forgotten me..O, He has forgotten me…He had promised…Here to meet me …On this street…But he hasn’t come yet…O, promises he had made to me…But he hasn’t come yet…To find out how I am…”…Where was that old song coming from? Who was singing it…I knew it from long ago..

I didn’t know what time of the day it was. It felt like evening, but I wasn’t sure. There was a strange glow in the sky. But I couldn’t locate the sun. Neither were there stars, or any sign of the moon. It could be early morning, but it didn’t feel like it. Something in your bones always knows what time of the day it is – but something seemed awry with mine. It could even be a clouded mid-morning – but I couldn’t see any clouds in the sky. In fact, the sky didn’t look like the sky at all – just this eerie glow. And I couldn’t locate the source of the light.

…“That evening that day was strange…This evening today too is as strange…Yesterday it was close to me…Today too it feels just as near…”…And where was this voice singing these old songs from pasts…?

I didn’t even know what I was doing there. In the middle of the narrow ribbon of road. There were some people going up and down – but they seemed shrouded. I couldn’t see their faces or their eyes. An occasional rattly vehicle trundled by now and then. I tried to retrace my thoughts to where I had been before I had got here – but I couldn’t remember. I looked behind me, but it was just this narrow grey road going as far as I could see, both behind me, and in front.

And unbidden comes another song…“I call your name as I walk along…through these streets and narrow lanes…All I want..Is to feel..the shade…of the cloud..that your tresses make…Just for one look of love from your eyes..My love…I call your name as I walk these streets and narrow lanes…”

And suddenly I thought – but who am I? I knew I was me – of course I knew me. I mean I could feel my familiar self, the familiar thoughts coursing through my brain. I looked at my hands – they were mine. I looked down at the rest of me. My chest, my belly, my legs. They were mine. I knew them to be mine. I had them all my life. So physically I belonged to a past. I mean I couldn’t be here now, within this body, unless I had arrived from somewhere, could I?

But where had I come from? I felt a vague uneasiness welling up. I had been on my way somewhere. I mean I had set out from somewhere - which I couldn’t remember. - to go somewhere - which I’d forgotten. Or seemed only vaguely to know.

… “Are you some dream..Or are you some kind of reality…Tell me…Who you are…You’ve been standing there..So far away…For such a long time…Come close to me…Let me see…Who.. or what you are…”

I cajoled my mind to try and think. Wait. A train. I had set out to catch a train. I didn’t know where I was going by that train, I had no idea where the station was – all I knew was that I had to get on that train. And this road I was in, would lead me to it, if I followed it.

So I began, or resumed, walking. I must have been walking to get here. Or travelling by some mode. All I knew was that I was standing there, in the middle of that road, under this strange sky, where I couldn’t tell the time, and that I had to go somewhere, for which I had to catch a train. So I set off. Somehow I knew I didn’t have to hurry too much. I had time on my hands. Not indefinitely. But enough for me not to hurry.

… “Come, Come my love..Walk with me..And I’ll take you to a place.. under a sky…Where there is no sorrow..Not even tears…Where only the flowers of love fruit lusciously…We’ll walk under such a sky…”…sang another familiar voice..

And the road? It was familiar. Yet, strange. I mean roads are like people you know. You know their features. You know what their voice sounds like. You can even predict how they think, and respond to a given situation, if you’ve associated with them long enough. This road felt like a friend whom I had not met for many years. Whose ways I had to re-learn. The familiarity regained from the mystery of strangeness grown through time not traversed together.

… “My Friend..you’ve not remained a friend…My love…you’re no longer my love…Life…I’ve lost faith in you..O Life… I’ve lost faith in you...”

And as I walked through the familiar sepia tinted path, it felt like I was listening to an old record. You know, like those solid 78 rpm records from the past. In my childhood I listened to them on hand-cranked record players, with needles that blunted and needed to be changed after every five or six times you played a song...

Songs that went something like this…“I don’t know what kind of people they are…Those who get love in return for love…When I asked for garlands of flowering buds…All I got was a garland of sharp thorns…”

Records playing old songs, sounding tinny with age. Sounding scratched because the needle gets blunt, and keeps slipping and skittering, finding it hard to stay in its groove. The past melding into the present, leaving only a grooved trace of the trail. Threading its way to a future, a smooth black blank space, where the groove runs out, and so does the song. Where the needle oscillates to and fro with a hiss, once the song is done – from the label, which cannot be read, because the turntable is still turning, to the end of the grooved thread it had just slipped out from.

And another song from the past begins humming in my head, a song somebody used to sing, long ago … “as long as my lips do not drink the nectar from your lips to its last dregs…this traveller’s feet will forever be entangled in your tresses…and I’ll hum this song… to your eyes and your face…wherever you may be..whatever path you may tread..I’ll sing my song..just this way..for you”…

So the song went..insistently hissing and scratching..from the needle which had slipped free from its groove.. I heard the song in my head…but I couldn’t read the label of the still turning record from which it played…the singer's song played in my head, his name blurred, obscured by the haze that distant pasts create.

As I walked, I began noticing the occasional abode that lay strewn on either side of the road. Moulding walls, spider-webbed with tiny cracks crawling all over the facades. The windows, heavy lidded – the coquettish eyes of aging beauty, long lashed, fluttering and flirting, enticing the shrouded passers by, in the decaying half-light, who did not pay any heed. Narrow, half opened doorways, withered, gnarled, beckoning, into musty darkened interiors…

From where a cracked voice sings from another hissing old record..“..do not leave me.. O my love… tearing your arms away from mine.. O my love..for then I swear.. On you and your name.. O my love.. I will not be able to stop the tears I shed..”..Was it coming from inside one of those houses, or was it playing in my head? I wasn’t sure. I walked on.

It was a town where time seemed to have stopped for a while, as if caught in a frieze. But which felt that it was about to start ticking again, anytime soon. As soon as it remembered how. The shrouded people that passed by seemed to be afloat in some lost romance, like the decomposing buildings. Their iconography displayed everywhere – like peeling posters plastered on crumbling walls. Giant murals of painted men and women frozen in mid air. Lurid dreams fossilized in rickety hoardings.

While the ancient vehicles, along with clanking bullock carts, chugged and huffed up and down, flowing like boats flitting on a river, or clouds skidding in the sky…

“Where does the Ganga come from…Where is the Ganga going to…Its waves flow…like shadows and the sunlight float in water..” --- Sings an old street singer, sculpted in stone, a beggar, really – holding his calloused hand out for a few coins --

While the noisy vehicles pass petrified roadside vendors, men in threadbare turbans, women in flowing, once vibrant, clothes, now tattered and faded, caught in frescoes, haggling their wares -- vegetables, fruit, or fries -- wheedling at their customers, and cursing their beedi smoking men, in the same breath.

I had been sensing it for quite some time now. There was someone following me. The light was beginning to wane, the road was darker. I looked behind me – but there were just shrouded figures walking. Just my imagination, I thought. I was just nervy, I decided. And walked on.

And I heard another haunting old melody… “Wherever you walk…My shadow will always be with you…My shadow will always follow you…If you should turn around and look for me…Even though you may not see me…My shadow is following you..My shadow is always with you…”

The feeling persisted. I could feel a presence looking at me intently from behind, and following me. I twisted around sharply, once or twice, to catch out the person, but each time it was just those blank shrouded people behind me that met my eyes. Now this shrouded figure that I had caught following me seemed like a chink of light in a darkened tomb in which I felt I was buried alive.

I turned off the road and entered an empty, dark, narrow lane that went into a thicket of trees, and waited, half hidden behind a tree. And sure enough, soon a shrouded figure stepped cautiously into the lane, and peered into the gloom. I stepped out and accosted the shroud, I could not tell if it was a man or a woman: Why are you following me, I said.

At which he or she turned around swiftly and went back into the road. I followed half running: Wait! I yelled. Stop. I called. Why are you following me? I asked. But the shrouded figure only walked faster, trying to melt in with the other shrouds. But I had it pinpointed in my eyesight. I had an imperative need to catch up and know what this was all about. What I was doing there. And why had he/she been following me. I was sure the shrouded being knew something. I had tried talking with the other shrouded figures around me – but all I got was silence.

…“My heart said something…It was nothing…My heart heard something…It was nothing…Such conversations too happen..My love…Such conversations do happen..”

So I held my shrouded figure hard in my sights, and followed it doggedly. But the faster I walked, the faster it seemed to move too. The distance was lengthening between us. I began running and calling out desperately: Hello! Wait! Please, Wait!

It had entered a big, crowded building – I knew I would lose him, or her, if I didn’t catch up now. I ran inside desperately looking for my shrouded creature and I suddenly realized I was at the station. And suddenly I knew why the shrouded being had been following me – to lead me here. I looked here and there, but I couldn’t see it anymore. It had melted with the others who were walking silently to and fro the platforms where trains were waiting.

I knew my train was on platform number three – I didn’t know how I knew that – I just knew. I walked up to my compartment, found my berth – all of which I also knew somehow – and lay down tiredly. It was dark now outside. I drifted off to sleep. And I didn’t even know when the train began to move.

“…I know not what paths I must walk..I know not what my world is…Whose hand I shall I seek…To help me traverse these paths..And I know not what my destination is…But my heart tells me…This is my world…And this is my destination…”

From the depths of deep slumber I heard someone calling me.. Rita…Rita..Wake up..

I wished they wouldn’t..I was so tired..I wanted to sleep – but somebody was shaking me now – Rita..Get Up..

I opened my eyes. Through the haze of half sleep I saw it was my mother shaking me and calling me: What is it..? I said drowsily. Let me sleep…

Get up..Or you’ll miss Belampalli..

And I was suddenly wide awake. It was broad daylight. Our train was moving slowly – a signal ahead had not given it clearance, my father told me. My mother and my father were sitting opposite, eagerly looking outside the window. We were on our way to Hyderabad – a journey we were making after almost twenty years of leaving the place.

But more than Hyderabad, where I went to school, it was Belampalli that we were all eagerly waiting for. For it was in Belampalli, a small coal minig town that my father had worked all his life, until he retired. It was in Belampalli that I had left my childhood behind.

Suddenly I yelled excitedly – I was a child once more – Ma, Baba, look – there’s that old movie theatre – Gawd, it’s still exactly the same—

Yes, time had stood still at Belampalli – the train was moving through its tiny station now, not stopping. So many times had we come to this station, usually on our way to school to Hyderabad, sometimes on journeys to Calcutta --- drunk tea from that tiny tea stall, waited hours for trains perpetually late.We watched in silence, tears in our eyes, as the train slowly left tiny Belampalli behind.

And an old song I loved came to my mind – “Bichad gayaa har saathi dekar pal do pal ka saath kisko fursath haijo thamme divaano ka haath humko apna saaya thak aksar bezaar mila - Isko hi jeena kahthe hai tho yuhi jeelenge - uff na karenge lab see lenge aasu peelenge - gam se ab ghabrana kaisa – gam sau baar milaa-”

“Separated …All our companions have left us…After spending only a moment or two..Who has the time Or the inclination…To hold the hand of old memories…Even my shadow has forsaken me… If this is what they call life…So I will live it as it is…Not a moan, nor a complaint shall pass through my lips…I’ll seal my lips…And drink my tears…Why should I fear sorrow…For familiar Sorrow has come a hundred time…”

(All the words within quotes are songs from old Hindi movies, from the late fifties, through the sixties, and maybe patches of the seventies – The golden age of Hindi cinema, and its music. Unlike in the West, India had no outlet other than its cinema for its popular music. Hindi cinema therefore, in those times, attracted some of the best poets the country has produced, and music composers, and singers. Their like will never be seen or heard again as we sink into crass cheapness and garish loudness that our cinema and music have generally degenerated to these days.

This story is dedicated to all those singers, composers and lyricists that gave so much meaning and beauty to my growing years – The golden voices of Hemant Kumar, Manna Dey, Mohammad Rafi, Mukesh, Talat Mehmood, Kishore Kumar, Geeta Dutt, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle... Music composers like SD Burman, RD Burman, Salil Choudhuri, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Kalyanji Anandji, O P Nayyar, Ravi. Lyricists like Sahir Ludhianvi, Kaifi Azmi, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Gulzar, Indeevar, Shailendra --- Just to name a few. They took the music from the traditional sounds of India – Folk, Classical etc, they took from the Western traditions, sounds from the Middle-East, and the far East --- and they made the most wonderful music. Of course translations can never capture the beauty of its originals – I have kept mine simple, perhaps simplistic, and direct – )

nervus facialis

oh, er, excuse me, just a sec, while I put my teeth back
in my face, and yes, hang on will you, till
I unstick my lips from its doorjamb – oh yes, my eyes are somewhere,
now let me see where I mislaid them – oh,
there they are, in the stone mug of salt-water skull-hole,
oh dear, now where is that tongue of mine,
bottled up in some desiccated doldrums, I bet – and my ears,
they’re impaled on the muted thorn-bush of auditory-nervosa,
and how could I, I forgot my nose, my chloroformed nervii-olfactorii of exteroception, wait, wait, a minute more please, let me put back my cheeks and forehead, my brows and eyelashes, can you find my chin, oh, where is my smile, oh, thank you – there, I’m done – ready to face the day, and you --
am I happy or in agony, I don’t really know -- you tell me –

At the Reservation Counter

(I am travelling by train after a long long time... I'm trying to recollect when I last did, and I can't. Anyway, I went to reserve my ticket to  Mumbai.. -- Yeah, actually went physically, instead of doing it online as I was advised to do, simply because I am still so old school about matters like actually having a ticket in my hand on board the train, since I am travelling alone -- ..Anyway, as I was saying, on my way to the railway reservation counter, which I went to early in the morning, hoping to be first in what I expected to be a long, interminable queue, I expected to spend a good part of the day there, for which I had armed myself with a book (how old school is that!), but to my pleasant surprise, I found the counters almost empty of queues, jostling people.. And my work was done in 5 minutes! I think the reason is that most people have started booking their tickets online, plus, at least in Bangalore, the railways have opened a number of reservation counters at various points in the city, thus solving the hassles of overcrowding. Whatever may be the reason, I was reminded of a short story I had written years back about my experience at a reservation counter.. Here it is.)

She was beautiful. I was a young man infatuated by her looks.

Long queues snaking towards pigeon hole ticket counters. A sizzling day in May. Asphalt melting, the pavements baking, outside, in the mid morning glare. The fans overhead desultorily whirring sending down waves of oven hot air. The large railway reservation hall, usually airy, stifling, jammed with people. The whole city seemed to be in a state of exodus to escape the scorching summer heat.

I was at the end of the queue at counter number 17. She, a little ahead of me at the next one, at counter number 16. She caught my eye instantly the moment I entered. Thirty-ish, curvy, hair cropped short, striking. She looked out of place there. She held a glossy magazine to her lipsticked face, with her red varnish tipped hands. Occasionally looking up to check the progress of the line. The lines were creeping along at a snail’s pace.

The old man stood in front of her. Limp grey hair clinging to the sides of his scalp, the top, a patch of brown skin, shiny with sweat. His cadaver like body stooped, belying his height. His thin-lipped mouth hanging open in a black void, displaying the few straggling yellowing teeth left. His eyes lusterless, the pupils hazy brown. He shifted from one foot to the other as he waited in the line.

The heat grew in intensity as the day wore on. The old man slowly licked his thin dry lips with a thick greyish pink tongue. She continued reading her magazine, turning the pages slowly. The dark ends of her hair turning into damp curls as droplets of sweat broke out on her delicate skin at the nape of her neck. I toyed with the idea of approaching her and making contact with some innocuous remark. But dismissed the thought. A snub was all I’d get, I could tell.

The large round clock on the wall said 11 o’clock. We had hardly moved forward. Computerization was supposed to speed things up, but things seemed to be as slow as the days of tickets being punched out after being painstakingly handwritten upon. Efficiency and speed were simply alien concepts to the Indian railway’s bureaucratic mindset, I fumed cantankerously.

Despite the heavy rush at the booking counters I could see several shut down. What did these guys lack? Manpower? Here? In India? Unless they felt the bite of competition they would never change their ways. Privatization was the only answer to getting better service. Ramesh, my roommate was right. We were in the fourth year of Engineering, the exams being unexpectedly postponed, I was trying to get a ticket to go home. But looking at the size of the rush I wondered if it was a futile endeavor.

The glass sliding doors behind kept opening and shutting as more people poured in from the heat outside into the furnace inside. I longed for a glass of the iced pink water melon juice being sold outside, but I dared not leave my place in the queue. I had seen angry squabbles arise out of people going out and trying to regain their place again at such lines. With the mercury tipping at 44 degrees Celsius, the utter weariness of standing unending hours, tempers were bound to be frayed, bonhomie destined to be non-existent.

And there were people everywhere. Everyone trying to get somewhere. Some were bunched at the large board which had the names, and the departure/arrival times of various trains. Groups of people hunched over the little counters against the walls, hastily scribbling into their little reservation slips. Some stood huddled, heads thrown back, staring at the monitors flashing pink, green, blue reservation information. And of course the masses of people who hung on stoically in the hardly moving queues.

And the hands of the clock unhurriedly ticked on. And the heat increased. The sweat poured. The fans turned ineffectually. She closed her magazine and began fanning herself with it. I was sure she smelled of expensive perfume. Despite the heat and the sweat she looked cool and collected. A sleeveless white blouse over slim cut jeans emphasized her delicious contours. My eyes drank her in. It was like drinking the cool iced watermelon drink that I could not drink.

The old man, pale lemon coloured shirt hanging loosely on his bony frame, shuffled forward a step clutching his reservation slip in his gnarled hand. His scrawny neck sticking forwards a little. His mouth still absently agape. His peering eyes fixed on the remote glassed ticket counter ahead. One hour crawled by. And then another. Inching forward, she had by now come to the mid point to the ticket counter. A broad grey granite pillar stood beside her and the old man now. The old man sagged against it. I could feel his weariness creeping in through my skin.

I wondered, a little irritated, what he was doing in that long queue, in this heat. Didn’t he have anyone with him? Didn’t he know that there was a senior citizen’s counter? I craned my head to look, yes, it was almost empty. I wondered if I should go and tell him. Then decided to mind my business. Anyway he probably had somebody with him. Probably just standing in for a short while.

I watched her instead. I saw her make a sudden face as she saw the ticketing clerk put a cardboard sign saying “Closed for Lunch” against the glass partition and walk away. It was crazy. Here were all these people, tired, standing for hours in the heat, just to get a ticket, and these guys were actually happily tripping off for a half hour lunch break! Couldn’t they have a rotation system so that the counters were manned 24 hours? At least in peak seasons like this? These guys really treat us people like dirt.

And why do we take it? Why doesn’t everybody in this hall rise and revolt at this kind of lousy treatment being dished out by these guys who are supposed to be at our service?

The old man blinked rapidly and turned towards her as if to say something. She moved her face away and opened her magazine again. The old man turned back again and looked a little nonplussed at the closed ticket counter. The half hour plodded by agonizingly slowly. Everyone hung on with stoic determination in their places.

The clerks returned behind the counters, looking replete. They tapped on their keyboards and the lines began inching forward again. A quarrel broke out at a queue nearby. Somebody had jumped the line. He said all he wanted was to ask a question of the ticketing clerk. The men in the line would have none of it. Go to the enquiry counter he was told. But the man insisted it would only take a moment. Three or four men, eyes smouldering hate, stepped out threateningly. The man retreated back to his place. A lull ensued. The heat smothered. The lines inched on.

She opened her bag and extracted a flimsy tissue paper and dabbed her neck and face with it. The old man was panting a little. There were only four or five people in front of him to the counter now. His eyes were fixed on the glass counter. A half hour dragged by. At last he was there. At the counter.

He grabbed the granite lip of the counter as if hanging on for dear life and pushed his slip in through the semi-circle cut into the glass, tentatively. The clerk impatiently grabbed the slip and looked at it frowning. After a moment . . . “Nampally?” he said, “This train goes to Hyderabad . . Do you want to go to Hyderabad?”

It was difficult to hear through the thick glass partition. The old man gave a desperate look at the clerk, turned a cupped ear to him and said in a cracked voice, “Eh . . . What?”
The clerk gave him an irritated look and shouted, “Where do you want to go old man?” Looking confused, the old man gave a frightened little start and said in a quavering voice, “I want to go to Nampally . . I have written it there . .” Pointing a withered finger at the slip in the clerk’s hand.

“ I know what you’ve written here old man, I can read,” the clerk said belligerently shaking the reservation slip at the old man’s face. “You’ve written Nampally,” he continued in a loud voice, “This train goes to Hyderabad . . Do you want to go to Hyderabad?”
The old man looked perplexed. He began stuttering, mumbling in his confusion . . “I don’t . . know . .” he said in a thin small voice.

“If YOU don’t know old man then I don’t know too,” saying which he shoved the reservation slip back towards the old man. The clerk reached his hand towards her for her slip, ignoring the old man who grasped his slip and looked helplessly once at it, then at the clerk. She passed her slip to the clerk.

The clerk looked at it and still in a loud voice said, “Which date? You haven’t put in the date.”
She replied in a quiet voice, “Any earliest available date.”
“The earliest available date is one month from now,” said the clerk.
She said yes that was ok. The clerk began punching the keys at the computer. The old man stood quietly beside her, his mouth open a little wider, his eyes staring at the clerk.

She spoke to him. She asked, “Where do you want to go, uncle?”
The old man gave a start and looked at her and, still confused, involuntarily said, “Eh . .”

She repeated her question a little louder, “Where do you want to travel to?”
“I want to go to Nampally. My son lives there,” replied the old man.

A man from behind said, “Nampally is near Hyderabad. Tell him to change the name of the destination to Hyderabad. He must get off at Hyderabad, then take a bus to Nampally.”

She said, “Uncle change the name to Hyderabad,” and when he looked at her questioningly, she explained why. The old man gave her an embarrassed little smile of comprehension. Pulling out a fountain pen from the pocket of his shirt he laboriously changed the name on the slip of paper.

The clerk spoke to her in a softer tone, “That will be 735 rupees madam.” She opened her bag, taking out a wad of notes, started counting out the sum. The clerk quietly reached his palm out to the old man for his reservation slip. The old man gave it to him. She gave her money to the clerk, took her ticket, and walked out into the summer heat.

My line was slower. It took me a little longer to reach my counter. The answer was the same. No tickets to be got at short notice – I walked out ticketless.

hey there,

hey there, have you wondered, how the earth-voice sounds, about how clay-eyes look when they seek how the fluid-flows in seething river-ducts, hey there, how do loam-lips lick moist-kiss, how does the mist-flower wake at the touch of the sun-lakes, and hey, how do toe-slugs and finger-moths dance on the streams of star-flakes, how do thirst-tongues taste nectar-dew flecks, how do fairy-strands weave fire tales around the night-blaze, and hey, and hey, how, how does the magic-moon glow silver rainbow flames, how do rhododendrons nod their heads in dream-slumber in the mountain-air, hey, hey, how do you hear a velvet-melody throbbing in venus-veins of the wind-air far away, is it some-one in the flesh-folds of some green-valley playing a tender tune on his flame-flute, or is it just a froth-wind whispering sweet-somethings through the leaf-tresses of his forest-sprite, and hey, how does rain-moss caress fern-feathers, how do cloud-rivers waft over ribbons of rain-gloss, and, hey there, have you wondered about the motionless night waiting with life-breath stopped listening to the dribble-drip-drip of the dusk-storm hiding in heaven-clouds, and, and hey, have you wondered what the black-dove dreams, silver motionless spiralling sparking sparkling igniting passioning lilting lilac-wildfire whirlwind-imaginings, hey, hey, hey - hey there,

Yet I listen for your voice

I listen for your voice in the contorted brittle bones of the night illuminated by ages of wrinkled moon filtering through cloudy skin the face sputtering like a cotton wick in an emptying lamp spouting fumes of longings belongings percolating through the ether like flour shaken through a sieve kneaded into tensile dough. And each day arrives and departs fluttering like clouds of butterflies in long lost gardens of bloom. Every clump of raw earth like scarred stranded driftwood. And I suspended on the shredded stump of a nebulous umbilical cord winding through the words I conjure and strew through mile upon mile of silences. Of time rambling like the nomadic peregrinations of multihued gypsy tribes wandering across boundaries of memories. One day they are there setting up camp their cooking fires bubbling and steaming their naked children laughing and screaming. The next day they have disappeared without a trace only a few smouldering fires regurgitating ghosts of shadows. The sands slip through the narrow arteries of unmentioned unspoken ties where seas of heartbeats drown the shores. Stranded in this flimsy boat I row with mighty strokes only to feel the strong tug of invisible tethers that bind me to the shore. A shore filled with shattered shacks bloated bodies drowned in their sleep a cemented floor bereft of its walls and windows. The coastline being torn apart by acres of aching saltwater lagoons. Yet I listen for your voice.

A cry;

The dust obscures the luminous evening star; As the cows are driven home by Ananda the cowherd; Gobinda the village headman takes his daughter Aruna’s horoscope to the astrologer; To find a husband for her;

The trees dance and bend in bowers; She looks at him in wonder; He takes her by her hand and they wander; Aruna and Ananda; Through paths lit by crystal fires; Under a sky as tender; As a newborn flower; Quivering silver; In a monsoon shower;

The grass greets the rain with a green shiver; Of inflamed desire; The cicada calls its lover; With a prayer; Sung in a hoarse whisper; The frog croaks an entreaty into the thunder; The wind replies with a murmur; Of a rumour;

That the peacock is dancing with his tail unfurled in a blue-green shimmer; In the forest cover; And that the crows the jackals the wolves and the hyenas are struck dumb and silently gather; And hover in the shadows with the vultures; As the cloud banishes the hot summer; And the honey-bee plunders; A last mouthful of nectar; And while the hibiscus ponders; Aruna is wedded to Rajinder; The son of Gobinda’s neighbour; A caste brother;

The lightning rips the sky asunder; In the forest the dancing peacock falls into the jaws of dark hunters; And the crows the jackals the wolves the hyenas and the vultures feast on the peacock’s bloodied feathers; In the seething river the boat flounders; Pulling on its tether; And in the distance -- a cry lingers;

against the wind

sliding out from the smooth linen

of slumber – gliding out like a motor-less glider

through the woven fibres of tunnels

of remembrances

floating in slow motion

arms extended like a five fingered albatross

clutching stray cloudlets caught in the

jagged folds of craggy stone-tipped histories

strewn with bits of skin, flesh, a tuft of feather, a scrap of limb,

a gasping beak, desperately flailing wing

torn tattered, bleeding, impaled on thorn-flowers –

waking up to today’s tenacity

trying out new wings against the wind

Seeking solace, peace in Suchitra Mitra

Suchitra Mitra and Hemant Kumar were the first voices I discovered and fell in love with in Tagore's music, which happened pretty late in my life - in my teens - considering that I am a Bengali, and considering that my father and mother listened to them, sang and hummed them ever since I can remember. I guess I was just deaf to this tender music before that.. also because I never lived in Bengal in my childhood days, where the influence of this music is so strong. For example, my mother and her sisters had to learn at least one Tagore song well, to sing when prospective grooms came to "see" them..

Anyway, thankfully, my mind and my heart and my soul did finally awaken, and I turn to them whenever my mind, my heart, my soul seeks gentle solace and peace, in life's lonely path.

Suchitra Mitra has remained my favourite voice, though I have discovered many more voices since those days of my teens..here are a few of her renditions:

the hermit

it lives its life

wrapped in the

convoluted silk folds

of its mind

encapsulated by opaque bone

sometimes it pokes

an enquiring tongue

through its skull hole

to taste the world

and sharply recoils

at the bitter tang

a hermit creature

it permits none

other into

its hard shell

sometimes it extends

trembling fingers

to touch the

shifting sands

on which it stands

and sharply withdraws

at the stinging bite

it listens

well hidden

in its dark hole

to the song

of the waves

to the sound

of the wind

telling it stories

of a world

it never

when she smiled

places she’s been to
walking over
plastic furniture
walking into blank walls
personal voices ringing
impersonally in her ears
speaking words
the meaning
lost in inanities
what insanity! --
with bold step, confident smile
strong of voice
she steps forth
though secretly her heart
sinks at the sound
of each foolish
blow that bruised
nevertheless
for she knew
in the secret
place in her heart
the falter she smothered
in her feet
the tremor
she concealed in her voice
the tremble she hid
in her hand - half outstretched
the fear she did not show
in the salt that stung her eyes
were hidden
in that secret
place in her heart
when she smiled…

Restless peace

Still seeking.. Wondering.. If there is
Anything on the other side.. Of Silence
Still learning.. How to overcome.. Fear
Of absences.. Silences.. Nothingness
Still learning.. How to quell.. The need

Wish I could say, 'I don't give a damn,
About absences.. Silences.. Nothingness..'
Trying hard.. To attain.. That state of bliss..
Of detachment.. Of needlessness

Did I imagine.. I heard your voice.. Your heartbeat
Just now..? The boat is anchored.. To
Such fleeting, nebulous.. Beacons..
Of hope.. The monsoon breeze..
Cools the burn.. In your heart's confusions

Beacons.. That light up.. Suddenly.. Dimly
In the darkness.. Of this never ending Night..
Just when.. I begin to feel.. I am fading
Out of your heart.. Your mind..
My mind comes awake.. Quells the heart ache..
Discards thoughts.. Confusions..
Of the fictitious.. And the authentic

Sleep then steals gently on my eyelids
And I put aside worldly woes.. And the ticking of Time
And despite a raging thunderstorm
I allow myself to drift.. Into the ephemeral oblivion..
Of restless peace

The fluttering leaf

Waking from an old familiar dream state

That same old dream - me seeking you

In vain, through obscuring clouds, sky, wind

A fallen leaf caught

In the eddies of

The careless wind

Fluttering - now here, now there

Now in helpless circles

Will I ever know if you and I belong

Did we ever belong

You and I, to each other

She asks the tree

How long will this longing last

Why did you discard me

She demands

Of the tree, so silent, aloof

Do you and I mean anything

To each other -

Did we, ever mean anything

To each other -

The leaf flutters

Restlessly, tirelessly

It seems, aimlessly

The tree, lofty, aloof

His branches, bare

Has no answer

You are my domicile where I bury my lifelines

In your realm of rushing, frothing river-deltas

I stroll over the fluxing topographies

of your fecund anatomy

with its many revelations. I identify

every contorted mudra,

every eyeball morphed declamation,

every incandescent idolatry

accompanied by crashing cymbals

and beating drums, every marigold garland

wrapped around your chiselled neck,

every soul-breath wrench, every incense perfumed

sweat-gland drop that emanates from your stores

of dateless times --

I know I’ll never penetrate

your cloud-hidden psyche. I know

You and I can never be We, Us.

To comprehend fully is to understand the need.

Like an unsevered umbilical cord,

it is your piecemeal manifestations, your kaleidoscopic

scatterings, that tie me to you.

Yet estranges me, leaving me rootless.

You’re more than the halo-ringed homescape

that I happened upon on the hairpin bend of a roller coaster

to the grail-road terminal I was blindly heading for

those years ago – I have forgotten now the exact postmark.

Time never mattered. Like you I let myself

get scattered in your labyrinthine theme streets. And travelled beyond

dollhouse mentations to congested settlements

of neon lit stage settings, bustling bustees, clogged crawling streets

where word-painters tell their stories in lurid retellings

and the unending traffic flows bumper to bumper, winding through

spanking new aspirations, multistoried dreamscapes rearing

above low lying corrugated hubs; floating rivers of narratives

where laughing children play and procreate

and days drift into dateless times -- all of which

grow on your carbuncled body like extra limbs.

Your earth is fertile. Your soil is febrile.

You are my domicile where I bury my lifelines.

The season's last mango

A long time ago -- Sometimes it seems like another life time --

When I was a little girl -- Ah, those carefree days of childhood

When the summer season arrived, I gorged on juicy mangoes

Ripe and sweet and as carefree as a laughing child

That juicy laughter of tangy sweetness with each mango bite

Has stayed on my tongue, dripping of the blazing Sun

And humid hot summer breezes, until today.

I wonder now, where were you then?

Were you also tasting mango bites on summer days?

Many years have gone by since; a life time has slipped by.

A blur of seasons of mango bites; seasons in which

Unbeknownst to me, perhaps, I sought you in the summer breeze.

Perhaps it is to share our mango bites - create new memories -

That you came into my life, stealthily, unbeknownst to me.

And yet, here is another mango season, slipping by,

And I'm unable to give you a slice of the mango

I bought just for you - the juiciest best of the season.

The season's last mango

Its soft sunrise tinted flesh bursting with

The nectar of the flower that gave it birth.

I wonder where you are now;

Are you also tasting mango bites in this fading season?

Does your mango taste like mine; of sun soaked earth and cloudless skies?

Does it taste of the koel's longing in its song?

Does it ever taste of the darkness of foreboding, disquiet,

The taste of a sense of loss?

The loss of carefree childhood; the loss of love that has not been.

Mould and trapped moonlight and bruised flower petals

Linger on my tongue like a misty wraith

Which explodes every once in a while

Like some premonition in my throbbing mouth.

Is that the taste of dying love? Would I, could I endure that?

Can I find strength within me to hang tough

About you forgetting me; About us never being - together -

Tasting the earthy fragrance of love's enfolding mango bites?

Of course, of course.. Time heals all, they say..

I take another bite of the season's last mango

While I keep watching, waiting, hoping.

And wondering, again and again, where are you now?

Are you also biting into the season's last mango?

Just Be...In Bliss

He made jest (of my overwrought words, I admit)
And my heart twisted in pain
Though I must hurry to explain
It was just a momentary lapse on my part
When I forgot one of Life's hard lessons
I had with difficulty learnt---
In order to avoid the pain of disappointment
One must eschew expecting anything from anybody
--Including from even He (my fictitious Love)--
And "Just Be in Bliss" in the present moment, Now
Let insignificant pains of jests (from even He, my Fiction)
Come and go, flow over Me
Like water on a duck's feathers, And
-- Just Be in Bliss --
Without need for even He

So here I am
Sitting cross legged
Eyes shut tight
To the golden Sun
Ears deaf
To the Koel's
Sweet song
In deep meditation
Just Being...in Bliss!

Silly poetic me

Before cold reality
Like ice water
Was smacked
Across my
Silly poetic eyes
And smashed
The rose tinted glasses
Silly poetic me
Loved to wear
I used to weave
Silly stories
About the Sun
Whom I adored
As the brightest
Light
In my sky
I imagined
The koel's calls
Were love songs
She sang
Tirelessly
To her adored
Sun
I strode
Across
Hard tarmac
As if I walked
On velvet plush
Carpets
I saw gold
Dripping
From
Sun drenched
Leaves
When
The trees
Quivered
In a shower
Of rain

My silly poetic soul
Quivered
In tune
With
All the sights
And sounds
I beheld
And
All the while
I hummed
Melodies
Silly poetic Me
Created
Out of
Nothing

So, dear Anonymous
I want to thank you
From
The bottom
Of my
Silly poetic heart
For
Splashing
The ice water
Of reality
On my
Silly poetic face
It is important indeed
To know
The difference
Between
The fiction
Silly poetic Me
Conjures up
From the
Nothing
That harsh
Reality
Is really made of

The sun
It is just
A gaseous orb
The koel
Is merely a bird
Its calls meaningless
Sounds
The trees, the rain
And all that stuff
Are just matter
That occur
Randomly
The hard tarmac
Is just that
Hard and unbending

It's far better
To look
Squarely
At the world
In the harsh
Glare of reality
And, thankfully
Now my sleepless
Nights
Devoid
Of silly poetic
Dreams
Are
Peacefully dead

Make believe love song

When the Sun
Hides behind
Dark cloud
The koel stops
Singing her
Make believe
Love song
She loses
Her illusion
Of illumination
Wracked in
Dark doubt

And then
A crack
In the cloud
The Sun
Sheds
A brilliant
Shard of light
Illuminating
Her make believe
World
Dispelling
Dark doubt

The koel
Finds
Her voice
Once more
Wallows
Blithely
In her illusions
Once more
Sings her
Make believe
Love song
Once more

My fictitious Love

My fictitious Love
For whom I write
Page after page
Of overwrought words
Are you just fiction
Or do you really exist
---A real person---
Lurking in the silence
With which you enshroud yourself
Hidden from my searching eyes
Between the pages
On which I write
My dreams about You
And Me
Fiction though it may be

My fictitious Love
Are you a real person
Who plays hide and seek
Between my story book pages
Waylaying me in the
Various camouflages
That you wear and discard
Appearing, disappearing, appearing
Again and again
With every turn of a page
Which I create perhaps
To trick myself perhaps
Into momentary magical moments
Of wonderment, of beatitude,
Of dreamy certitudes
Fiction though it may be

But, my fictitious Love,
Even while we play our endless
Games of make believe
And I keep creating and recreating
You -- my main, my only -- Protagonist
The Hero I wring, squeeze, exude
From my fervid, fervent imagination
The champion who wins every accolade
In every field of endeavour
The warrior who defends me, protects me
From every adversary
The illustrious star who strides
Head held high through
The pages of the story I write
Sometimes I wonder
How will our story end
What will be the fate of this tale
Is it going to be a tawdry tragedy
You know, one of those tearjerkers
That leave you so mushy and sad
Or is it going to be one of those spectacular
'They lived happily ever after'
Fairy tale endings
We love to see in the movies
As we ride off arm in arm
Into the sunset of a rosy horizon!

Fiction often has this propensity
To mimic Life--
Until we turn to the last page
---Yet to be written---
It can be full of hidden uncertainties

My invisible companion, playmate, soulmate..

Why won't you speak to me, my invisible companion, playmate, soulmate? I know you're there, I know you care.. Then why the silence? I know our hearts beat in tune.. Then why will you not acknowledge it? It doesn't have to be publicly, openly.. You can stay anonymous, if that is what you want, dear Anonymous. Can't you talk to me, dear Anonymous? Won't you share the secrets of your heart.. all about your life.. when were you born.. where did you grow up.. what, how were you as a child, as a teenager, a young adult, and now, what makes you tick as a man..?

What were your dreams about then.. What are your dreams about now? What do you do when you wake up in the morning.. What do you busy yourself with during the day.. What is the last thing you think of as you shut your eyes in sleep at night? Who cradled you to sleep when you were young, who cradles you now?

My dusky skinned love, I long to look deep into your eyes.. and seek your soul in them, if you would let me. With your gentle ways, you spread sweetness in my life.. I hold dear, and preserve, every little interaction we've had, as a precious memory..keepsakes that I shall keep in the secret corners of my heart.. To bring out sometimes..to reminisce about..smile wistfully about.. About what was perhaps never meant to be.. And even as I say these words, my heart twists in pain. Won't you tell me what reminisces you keep in the secret chambers of your heart?

My gentle eyed love, with skin like the dusk; I don't quite remember when exactly it was that I first noticed your gentle voice; When, at which exact point of time, on which exact day - was it a morning, evening, or night - which month, which year..that you came into my life. When was it that our hearts first met, and recognised each other, and spoke to each other in the secret language of lovers?
When was it that I first began to weave my hopeless dreams?

Won't you come and walk beside me in the sun dappled or rain soaked pathways I traverse? Won't you unbind your voice, your heart, and just talk to me? About anything.. about the music you love.. about what you read about.. about what you feel passionately about.. about the weather.. about the little vexations that occur in your life.. about the little joys that sprinkle your days. Give me homilies.. teach me the things you know.. care about.. I want to listen to the music of your thoughts.

Every time I reach out to you.. to connect with you at a deeper level, you withdraw...create distance between us. I wonder why.. Is it because you're tied to someone else? If that be so, I would honour her..and silence myself. But can't you, won't you tell me if that is what it is? If that is what it is, can't we be just friends?

Won't you speak to me, my invisible companion, playmate, soulmate?

Beyond the next bend

The air rushes with carsickness

Small globules of bile, yellowed, bitter like neem

roil in the watery sun

Fingers trail the jet streams, ears listen

to the sharp edges. the smell of metallic diesel

internally combusting

suffuses the sullen season of reasons

treason spikes the hills with sharp crimsons

where the road twists and loops, twice and thrice,

to trace back its origins

like a life line etched inside a doll’s stiffened hands --

Leaning over the dangerous periphery

of imaginations, you fall belter skelter through the

cloud-gaps over the prostrated flat lands below

where dwarf trees and stunted houses are shunted

like shabby picture print-outs tossed

sloppily—

Your eyes are transfixed on a point

beyond the next bend.

I need

I need to
Hold your hand
I need to feel
Your need to
Hold my hand
I need to hear
Your voice
Telling me
You need to hear
My voice
I need to hear
You say
You need me

Each time I think of you
Seek you in the clouds, in the skies,
In the trees rustling in the breeze
In the koel's voice piercing like a knife
In the shudder of thunder
In the sound of sputtering rain
Each time I wonder about you
Every moment of day and night
In my waking hours, in my dreams
I know you're there, somewhere
Yet remain enshrouded
In your cloud of silence
Piercing me like a knife

Sometimes I think it's just a fantasy
I pace up and down restlessly
Through sun dappled streets
And wonder if we were ever meant to be
Often I tell myself I must find the strength
To face reality that it's just a fantasy
But that silly heart of mine
Refuses to understand
Refuses to be strong
With every throbbing beat
Clings to this impossible dream
Fantasy though it may be

Fantasy though it may be
Still I cling helplessly, hopelessly
To this impossible dream
That you need me just as much
As I need you

I need to
Hold you in my arms
I need to feel
You need to
Hold me in your arms
I need to hear
Your voice
Telling me
You need to hear
My voice
I need to hear
You say
I need you
I need to say
I love you
I need to hear you say
I love you
